Terms

Reuse, credit and corrections

Two kinds of material, two sets of terms

We want our reports printed, quoted, forwarded and put in front of decision-makers, so the reports are openly licensed. The datasets and tools behind them took the most work to build, so we keep the rights to those while leaving them open to view and check.

Reports: reuse freely, with credit

The text of our reports and pages, the tables and charts in them, our original maps, the one-page briefings and the report PDFs are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). You may copy, print, share, quote and republish them, including in a commission packet, a news story or a class, without asking and without a fee, as long as you give credit.

Name The 1565 Coalition, the report, its "current through" date, and link the page. For example:

Source: The 1565 Coalition, "Seven pending agricultural enclave filings in St. Johns County," current through Oct. 1, 2026, the1565.com/enclave-watch/. Licensed CC BY 4.0.

If you change anything, including trimming a table or recoloring a map, say that you changed it. Our maps and perimeter percentages are Coalition estimates from public GIS layers, not surveys, and our figures carry the date they are current through. Those notices are part of the work, and the license requires you to keep them.

Datasets and tools: free to view and check, rights reserved

These are not covered by the open license: the evidence workbooks and audit register (XLSX), the data files the site publishes or loads (including the GIS perimeter-screen data, the evidence register and the source and case records), the savings estimator and other interactive tools, and the site's code.

  • You may open, read and search them; check any figure in our reports against them; and quote individual figures with credit. Commissioners, County staff, journalists, researchers and residents may use them in their own review of a matter.
  • You may not, without our written permission, republish them in bulk, copy them into another database, or build a product, service, app or interface on them, whether paid or free.

Facts themselves, including figures drawn from public records, belong to no one. These terms cover our compilation, structure, analysis and code. To ask about other uses, email hello@the1565.com.

What no license covers

  • Our name and mark. "The 1565 Coalition" and the 1565 mark are reserved. You may say a work came from us; you may not use the name or mark as your own or in a way that suggests we produced or approved something we did not.
  • No endorsement. Reusing our work does not mean we endorse you, a candidate, a campaign or a position. Do not put our name or mark on a vote recommendation or campaign material.
  • Other people's material. Statutes, ordinances, staff reports, County GIS data, quoted records and photographs credited to others belong to the public or to their owners and are governed by their own terms.
  • Community posts. Contributions to Community voices belong to their authors, who let us publish them on this site.

Versions and corrections

Every report shows the date it is current through and a version number. When we correct or update a report, we log the change on the Updates page and keep the earlier PDF available, so a quoted figure can always be traced to the version it came from. If you republish a report, please link to the live page so readers see corrections.

Found an error? Email hello@the1565.com with the page, the statement and your source. Material errors are corrected publicly.

If you see our work misused

Email hello@the1565.com with the address of the copy, what was taken, and the page it came from. The cases that matter most: our name or mark used to imply endorsement, our datasets republished or built into a product, maps stripped of the "estimate, not a survey" notice, and copies that keep a figure we have since corrected.
